810 Munchies Brings Flavor and Heart to Dort Mall

Something new is cooking inside the historic Dort Mall at 3600 S. Dort Hwy., Suite 62 — and it’s not just food. It’s passion. It’s community. And it’s the vision of Chef Steve Brewer and his wife, MacKenzie Brewer. For months, Steve quietly kept a secret, even from many friends and regulars who knew him from past ventures like Tom’s Coney Café. “I think I’ve done my best to keep my mouth shut,” Steve admits with a grin. “I didn’t want to let it out too soon.” That secret is 810 Munchies — a new restaurant born from a joke name that stuck, and now represents the Brewers’ next big leap in the food world. From Joke to Brand Originally, 810 Munchies started as a kitchen project at the Genesee County Compassion Club (G3C). “I thought it would just be a side thing,” Steve says. “But the food went over so well, people loved it, and before long, I realized we had something bigger on our hands.” Encouraged by customers and friends, Steve kept the playful name. “Everyone said, ‘You have to keep it. That’s your brand now.’ So we did.”

When Steve Brewer and his wife first learned their eldest son had autism, they were overwhelmed.

Today, Brewer is the father of two non-verbal sons on the spectrum, and that life-changing experience inspired him to act. Brewer founded the Autism Parent Support Network, a local group that helps families navigate the challenges of raising children with autism. His advocacy didn’t stop there — he went on to launch 810 Munchies, a restaurant designed to create a safe and welcoming space for people with special needs. “There are many theories and possible links to autism, like food dyes and the environment,” Brewer said. Still, he stresses there’s no single cause. “There’s no way that you can link just one direct thing to autism,” another speaker added. Through his efforts, Brewer has built both a business and a community resource, turning his family’s challenges into hope and support for others.!.

Title: Flint’s 810 Munchies Serves Up Inclusion Alongside Every Meal

. (TV5 News)— New at six, a recently opened restaurant inside The Dort Mall is turning heads — and hearts — by making inclusivity its daily special. 810 Munchies, founded by owner **Steve Brewer**, offers a welcoming space where individuals with special needs are not only accepted but celebrated. “It’s just a standard Coney Island menu,” Brewer said. “I run a lot of specials every week.” But beyond the familiar comfort food, Brewer’s restaurant provides something rare — a **sensory-friendly dining experience**. With **low lighting, kid-friendly options**, and a policy of understanding rather than judgment, Brewer has created what he calls a *safe space for everyone.* “No Karens allowed,” Brewer said with a laugh. “Kids are allowed to act how they’re gonna act — whether they stim, jump, or scream. If they wanna color on the windows or the chalkboard wall, that’s fine. Anything that makes their experience easier.” The inspiration came from a painful moment. Brewer, whose two sons are **non-verbal and on the autism spectrum**, recalled a negative encounter while dining out.
